USBメモリの考案者に関する考察
GoogleなどでUSBメモリの考案者を調べると次の2人の名前が出てくる。
(1) Ziba戦略ディレクターの濱口秀司氏
(2) イスラエルのM-SystemsのAmir Ban氏
どちらも、USBメモリの発案者として記事や講演で紹介されている。面白いのは、一方の紹介の文脈にはもう一方の名称が現れないことである。つまり、濱口氏の紹介にはM-SystemsやAmir Banは現れず、M-Systemsの紹介の文脈ではZibaやHideshi Hamaguchiは現れない。
非常に興味深いが、誰も突っ込んでないようなので、「ドクター中松のフロッピーディスク発明」的なことを期待して調べてみた。
少し調べると、英語版Wikipediaの濱口秀司氏の記事にM-Systemsの名前があるのを見つけた。
While at Ziba, he created the concept of the world’s first USB flash drive. IBM first marketed the drives in North America in 2000, with its product the “DiskOnKey” (manufactured by the Israeli company M-Systems).
これによると、製品コンセプトはZiba、製造はM-Systemsということになる。一方、英語版Wikipediaの”USB flash drive”を見ると以下のようにM-Systemsが特許を持っていることになる。
USB flash drives were invented at M-Systems, an Israeli company, in a US patent filed in April 5, 1999 by Amir Ban, Dov Moran and Oron Ogdan, all M-Systems employees at the time.[7] The product was announced by the company in September 2000, and was first sold by IBM in 8MB capacity starting December 15, 2000.[8]
米国特許庁で同特許を参照すると、内容や出願時期もWikipediaの記載は正しいと推測される。ただし、Ziba社や濱口氏の名前の記載はない。
このことからすると最初の記事にある”manufactured by the Israeli company M-Systems“は、嘘ではないが、designしたM-Systemsの役割を少々低く記載していると思われる。
ここまでの結論としては次のような役割分担となる。
